Just formalizing this into its own thread--and even giving it a sticky (for now, a la "HHHH").

The rules are simple: Build a propeller aircraft (fixed or rotary wing, I suppose) that is only based loosely in reality. Think "Crimson Skies". Think "Laputa". Any scale is acceptable. Some kit-bashing and scratch-building skills are probably going to be necessary to complete this build.

We're looking at a start date of October 1. Sign-ups will continue through November 1, at which point we'll (loosely) close them down just so this comes to an end at some point.

Here's who we have so far--correct me if I'm wrong:
  • :pirate: CaptainPlastic
  • :pirate: Irk
  • :pirate: Malich
  • :pirate: Major Blah
  • :pirate: Spiffitz
  • :pirate: zerobxu

Feel free to post your questions, comments and references below. And feel free to join in on this. It should be challenging, but still definitely fun.

As for me, I'm off to the used video game store at lunch to see if they have a copy of the "Crimson Skies" game guide--it should be good for some artwork.

And here's what we've split off from the Build-Off Ideas thread...

ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
It would appear that there may be some interest in a "Crimson Skies" Build-Off.

First off, let's guage the interest. Who's intersted in taking some existing models and throwing together a confuzzled, whimsical flying contraption?

I think the rules would be fairly simple...

1. Must be inspired by--and share a striking similarity to--a pre-existing aircraft of the "Crimson Skies" universe. Example, my li'l Doppelganger is not a perfect reproduction of the C.S. Grumman E-3C Doppelganger, but it's close enough where people familiar with C.S. know what it is.

2. Scale is irrelevant. If you want to build in 1:32, 1:48, 1:72... Even 1:100 or 1:144, it doesn't matter.

3. This probably goes without saying, but--unless it's a total scratch-build--you're going to need to utilize at least two separate aircraft kits in order to make one plane. This is why I like doing 1:72--cheap, and readily available.

4. Start date: Later than now. October 1? November 1? Any later than  that, and I may not be able to start one till around April. Completion date: Probably six months, in case we side-line it while waiting for parts, etc.

Interested? Post a reply here.

With my track record of not finishing GBs and what not, I would not jump in at this moment.  However, it does sound like an excellent idea.  A good way to combine some kit-bashing, scratch-building, and reference-googling.

An idea just came to my head...would it be ok if say...a Savoia S.21 suddenly came out of the blue and shoot down ALL the air pirates  :pirate2:?  Would the most famous, handsome piggie-pilot be allow into this fantasy world??

Zero: Wuz you readin' my mind???  :D Earlier today after seeing your Doppelganger the thought came to me, "That looks like a fun build - would be neat to see a 'flying contraption' GB/ or Build-Off."

I am not familiar with the "Crimson Skies" universe so I would definately have to include a certain amount of research - and my workshop was recently torn apart due to a flood in my basement. . . but excluding these disadvantages I would say that I am very interested.

A lot of Crimson Skies aircraft are based off of Luftwaffe WWII secret project aircraft, so it's basically our own "Luftwaffe 1946" build-off? I've got quite a collection of unbuilt L46 models but I'm sure what you had in mind was for us to build our own version. I think I'd be interested in this.

What if we were to expand the build into "Propeller Aircraft That Never Were" (needs a much better name)? This would allow the Savoia, Luftwaffles 46, and whatver Irk might be cooking up?

Gentlemen, what are your thoughts? Widen the horizon a bit? Or keep to the "Crimson Skies" theme?

Personally--if it'll get a completed model out of Blah--I'm all for the change.

I'll second that!! Come on Canada!  :P

I really like the freedom of "Propeller Aircraft That Never Were"  - with a subject like that I could see stuff like foo's masquito popping up. Though after a quick search of Sovoia, Luftwaffe 46, and Crimson Skies - I'm sure I could find inspiration there too. Crimson Skies reminds me of Sky Captian and the World of Tomorrow (which had some cool machines too)

I like this. Anything goes (flies?) as long as it has props.

Oh boy, what have I got myself into?  Now I'm representing Canada?   :twitch: What about Porco's honor?!

Sounds like a fun build-off though.  But I think we should maybe limit it to the world of pirates or bounty-hunters?   :pirate:

I like the idea of the "Propeller Aircraft That Never Were".  It's got my vote.

I think I have the fuselage narrowed down for the Crimson Skies Brigand.  The wings may be another story though, gotta keep lookin.

If we are going after air pirates I guess that all crafts should have some sort of a defense system as a requirement? Guns, cannons, lazers, grappling hooks, etc.

Propellers are a must.

October 1 is fine for a start date for me. Anyone elses thoughts?

I'm all for guns and stuff although I'd rather not make it a requirement, but how does one "pirate" from/with an aircraft? He downloads MP3s through his cockpit radio? I'm serious here. You can't exactly land an aircraft to plunder ye vast riches while expecting to get away with it.

Read up on "Crimson Skies" (here's the Wiki entry, to start you off), watch "Porco Rosso", and go from there.

So for entries, we have Irk, Spiffitz, Malich, myself, and Major Blah--so far. Or are some of you still feeling this out? I'm good with an October 1 start, as I want to try to do something for GB4, but I think I can work on the two projects simultaneously.

Let's hear some additional input on this...

Zero: This sounds like a great BO. Please split the relevant threads from this topic, give it an official name and letter code, and have fun!

Well... That was the other thing... It needs a decent name. I like throwing "Crimson Skies" into the title, but it's not strictly a C.S. build. "Crimson Skies & More"? "Prop Fantasy"?

I'd be on FFF more, but I'm in a class thru Friday, and--as much as I love "Future Girl", I think some more sensitive elements in the class may have issues with it. Especially since I'm on a government-issued laptop right now.
